Personality Traits

Disturbing Personality Traits

Disturbing personality traits are often an inevitable consequence of unresolved trauma.

Often these traits were modeled for us, or we developed them in response to something in our environment.

These traits disturb others and block us from truly connecting and getting our needs met.

Do you relate to any of the following disturbing personality traits?

  • Irresponsible

  • Self-pity is oozing from every pore

  • Miserly, callous, or cold

  • Irritable, critical, impatient and humorless

  • Dominating the whole family by a rule of iron

  • Lavishing attention upon one family member and neglecting the others

  • Constant outpouring of minute directions
(This is often an attempt to ensure the well-being or reputation of self or others.)

For each trait that I relate to, I ask myself...

What need/s did this trait meet or might this trait have met in the beginning?

Does it still meet that need / those needs?

What need/s am I currently trying to meet with this behavior?

Is is working? How effective is it?

What harm/damage is this trait causing?

How will my life play out if I continue to indulge in this trait?
What might the final outcome look like in the end?

Do I know anyone else who has this trait and who is further along the path with it than me? (Perhaps someone older?)
If so, what does their life look like now?
